Acting with us

Food assistance

With the economic crisis linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, Partage had to face many new challenges, not least the sudden increase in the number of beneficiaries. We went from supporting less than 10,000 people a week to more than 12,000.

The food insecurity situation is such that the Geneva Food Bank has been entrusted by the cantonal authorities with the preparation of food aid bags, which are delivered to distribution sites throughout the canton.

All our logistics were affected, and we had to reorganise our teams, recruit volunteers and sometimes even hire temporary staff.

Despite the end of the pandemic, many people and families are still affected by its social and economic consequences, and still need food aid. Inflation and falling purchasing power are also having an impact.

The simultaneous downward trend in unsold food and the increase in the number of beneficiaries have forced Partage to make exceptional food purchases, increasing its budget from CHF 300,000 in 2019 to almost CHF 6,000,000 for 2021.

Partage also provides food aid to Ukrainian refugees who have just arrived in the canton. The recent crisis in Ukraine has also had an impact on the food bank’s activities, with rising prices and stock-outs, while the number of beneficiaries is growing again.

So, with the tireless help of almost 100 volunteers, we prepare some 4,500 food hampers every week for the canton’s needy.

Distribution of food hampers to the following institutions in the canton of Geneva: Adage, Café Cornavin, C.A.R.E, CausE, Centre Islamique de Genève, Fondation Colis du Coeur, La Farce – grocery shop for students, Solidarité Pâquis.

Partage collects unsold goods daily from 90 supermarkets in the canton.

It also sorts and stores the foodstuffs.

Every day, nearly 50 associations and social services benefit from the redistribution of unsold goods by Partage.
