One of Partage’s key areas of activity in the fight against food waste is the recycling of perishable foodstuffs.
Over the years, Partage has set up a number of projects to make the most of unsold food, including soup and cookie-making. Since 2015, Partage has been developing a coffee roasting and grinding project. But what is the preparation process and how does Fondation Partage contribute to it ?
We collect green coffee free of charge from companies involved in the coffee trade in Geneva, and then deliver it to a partner company for roasting – a delicate process that requires special equipment. Once the coffee has been roasted, it is transported to our premises, where it is ground and packaged in 500 gram packs by an employee on a vocational rehabilitation scheme.
Once the coffee bags are ready, Partage sorts and stores them. It then distributes it to the beneficiary associations and social services, which use it to prepare meals and snacks for the beneficiaries, or redistribute it to them.
The increase in the volume of coffee prepared is no exception to the trend in Partage’s activities in 2020. In fact, in 2019, 523 kilos of coffee were prepared, whereas in 2020, no less than 1,261 kilos will be prepared – an increase of more than 140% !
The development of value-added projects enables us to combat food waste and adapt to the increasing number of beneficiaries, while diversifying our activities.
