Geneva Marriott Hotel

Oscar Baillif

Oscar Baillif was born in Geneva in 1972. He studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs (now the CFP Arts) in Geneva and at the École supérieure d’Art Visuel de Genève, now the HEAD. From 2004 to the present day, he has taught observational drawing and figure drawing at the CFP Arts and the ESBDI, as well as at the Haute école sociale (HES) géographique, exhibitions, drawing performances and figure sculptures, etc., and at ACCES II. His artistic work is essentially figurative drawing. He draws mainly for pleasure on a daily basis, filling notebooks or drawing on loose sheets of paper in a variety of formats. ‘Whether he’s observing reality or drawing on his imagination, with his drawing practice he seeks to explore places, meet people and discover different environments, as well as experiencing and sharing creative moments’.

For him, it’s important that his drawing work finds its place, articulates and clarifies itself alongside public, collective or personal artistic projects in a variety of forms and media: sketchbooks, posters, silkscreen prints, engravings, books, fanzines, etc. He has taken part in and collaborated on artistic events, exhibitions and editions with publishing houses (Carte d’itinéraires pédestres DE Traverse, Drozophile, Hécatombe, Ripopées, Éditions Nicolas Wagnières). ‘Biennales d’Art et Festival’, La fureur de Lire, BIG, BAI, Picto Bello -Vevey), ‘Galéries et Musée’, Galérie et Série rare, Galerie Papier Gras, Galerie Halle Nord, Espace Cheminée Nord, Le Commun, Château de St Maurice and an exhibition at Galerie Tiramisu with illustrator Julien Käser.

Partager, c’est pas chacun pour sa pomme

For this Fondation partage project, I worked around this phrase taken from common, spoken language. I was interested in the sound of a barroom brief, because it brings a theatricality, and in my opinion, it doesn’t sound like a statement. I wanted to draw a utopian fresco, shedding light on the possibility of targeted actions based on sharing and proximity.

In customising this giant apple, I set out to create a scenography for the words in this sentence, so that the images and words could be read in a panoramic and spherical way according to the shape and volume of the object.

I wanted to make a reference to the theatre of life in the street.

I tried to arrange the letters like modules in a street theatre set, so that I could draw little scenes in which characters, animals and props move around and mime the action of sharing in an atmosphere and light.

Ideally located between the mountains and Lake Geneva, the Geneva Marriott Hotel embodies a new approach to hospitality, centred on regenerative hospitality and a deep commitment to social development and environmental sustainability. This vision is embodied in the promotion of short supply chains and tangible solidarity initiatives, such as the sustainable partnership established with the Fondation Partage when the hotel opened.
