Exem was born in 1951 in Geneva, where he studied for his Latin Maturité and then Political Economy. Between 1973 and 1986, he worked as a theatre technician. For the past forty-five years he has worked as a cartoonist, incognito behind his false nose, thick eyebrows and Ray-Bans. He enjoys making comics, designing posters, both large and small, illustrating brochures for all kinds of institutions, drawing for the press and working on the most unlikely of materials: sugar sachets, metal tins, Russian dolls, etc.
In the world of comic strips, he is the father of the legendary Lanceval, Percelot, Zinzin and Mildiou series, which have brought him fame and fortune. As soon as he could, he ran hills and valleys, which enabled him to display that cheeky young man’s physique. For twenty-three years he taught the history of comics and their narrative techniques at the Haut École de Gestion in Geneva, and since 2010 he and his beloved Mireille have been running the Séries Rares gallery in Carouge.
He finds that the days are too short.
The apple is the image of the Fondation Partage, hence its presence (which can be described as “massive” given the size of the object) in twenty copies as a support for the twenty artists’ interventions, in celebration of the Fondation’s twentieth anniversary. But more broadly, in the collective imagination, it is commonly associated with the forbidden fruit, and therefore with the scene of temptation leading to the expulsion of Eve and Adam from the Garden of Eden.
Although both share the same fate, it is Eve who traditionally bears the burden of responsibility for original sin. In my work, the idea is to go against this pattern and depict a shared responsibility, with each of the two holding out an apple to the other, or even a bunch of apples, or inheriting half an apple shared by the snake itself. The expression of sharing and shared responsibility is achieved here with reference to pictorial representations of Adam and Eve and original sin, in particular those dating from the 16th century by Jan van Scorel, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Frans Floris. All in the style of an apple tree woodcut.
